The predecessor of Hebei University of Technology is called the Beiyang technology school established in 1903, which is the earliest university in China to cultivate industrial talents, and it founded the earliest university run factory in China.
The University ranked among the first batch of key universities under the national "Project 211" in 1996. In 2014, it was jointly built by Hebei Province, Tianjin and the Ministry of education. In 2017, it was selected as a national "double first-class" University.
The university has 21 teaching institutions and 78 undergraduate majors, covering seven disciplines of engineering, science, economics, management, arts, law and fine arts. The university vigorously implements the project of strengthening the university with talents and constantly improves the mechanism of introducing and training high-level talents. The university has more than 2,700 teaching staff, including more than 1,600 full-time teachers. In recent years, the university has introduced and trained full-time national talents, including "Changjiang scholars", "National Outstanding Youth Fund" recipients, and national "Ten Thousand People Plan" leading talents in science and technology innovation. The university has built 54 national and provincial research platforms, including provincial and ministerial state key laboratories, national engineering technology research centres and national joint local engineering laboratories. The university was approved as one of the first national pilot universities for intellectual property rights and ranked 70th among the top 100 universities in China for patents. The university has established more than 5,000 new projects and undertaken 48 major national projects.
