School of Material Science & Engineering Strengthened International Academic Exchange

    School of Material Science & Engineering of HEBUT actively promoted international academic exchange based on the objective of building a high-level university with common efforts of parties concerned by means of innovation as well as strengthened top grade design. This School has gradually established a new mechanism of long-term stable international academic exchange and effectively improved the international influence of this School and HEBUT. In order to strengthen the development of subject connotations of the School, build up the academic atmosphere, improve the strength and level of scientific research, shorten the gap between the School and the top international level of related fields, and quicken the connection with world science, the School, taking the opportunity of the 110th anniversary of HEBUT, widely invited many domestic and international famous scholars to promote academic exchange & cooperation program consisting of 9 academic reporting and exchange meetings, which may be called a grand academic banquet.

 

    On June 14, Professor Yun Hang Hu from Michigan Technological University (MTU) in USA came to HEBUT for academic exchange. Professor Yun Hang Hu is a chief professor of MTU, and also the chairman of the Energy & Fuel Department of American Chemical Society. Leaders of the School had an amicable exchange and meeting with this professor. Both parties introduced in detail the respective conditions of their universities and schools. Taking this opportunity, the School actively publicized the development conditions of HEBUT and construction of subjects in the School. Finally, the School and the Department of Material Science & Engineering of MTU reached consent and concluded a memorandum on academic exchange and student exchange, indicating establishment of a good cooperation relationship between the two parties. In future, the two parties will cooperate in talent exchange and fostering, international cooperation, resource sharing, academic exchange, and so on. During visit of Professor Yun Hang Hu, he made an academic speech to the teachers and students of this School in the afternoon of June 14, which was named “Carbon Nano-Materials: A Bright Future”.

 

    On July 10, Professr Xia Zhenhai, former director of Department of Material of Hebei Institute of Technology and current professor of University of North Texas in USA, visited HEBUT upon invitation. In the morning of July 10, Professor Xia made a speech named “Hetero-doped graphene nanoplatelets as efficient electrodes for fuel cells”. In this report, Professor Xia introduced the use of hetero-doped graphene nanoplatelets as efficient electrodes for fuel cells. Later, Professor Xia had an intimate talk with Professor Liu Jianchang, vice president of HEBUT. In the morning of July 11, Professor Xia met Professor Li Qiang (secretary of Party committee of HEBUT) and Professor Zhan Yong (president of HEBUT). They exchanged opinions on the fields which they were interested in, and expressed the intent to cooperate in such aspects as talent exchange and fostering, international cooperation, resource sharing and academic exchange and to strive for a material breakthrough in top grade talent introduction.


 

    On September 13, Doctor Liu Jinfang, who was graduated from HEBUT and currently technical president of EEC Electronic Energy Company in USA, visited HEBUT upon invitation and made a speech named “Research on hard magnetic material and progress in such research”. This speech was chaired by Professor Cui Yongxiang, the library director, and scores of teachers and students listened to it. In this speech, Doctor Liu introduced his personal course of growth as a graduate from HEBUT and his recent research, and introduced in detailed but simple terms the latest international research progress in hard magnetic materials. After the speech, Doctor Liu met the leaders and teachers of the School, and expressed his longing for HEBUT and the schoolmates. Meanwhile, the two parties exchanged opinions in the fields which they were interested in, and expressed the intent to cooperate in future. 

    On September 27, upon the invitation of this School and Professor Yin Fuxing, Doctor Xu Yibin, chief researcher of National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) in Japan, gave a speech named “Thermal design and thermo-physical property characterization of micro- & nano-scale materials” to the teachers and students of HEBUT. This speech was chaired by Professor Yin Fuxing, and Doctor Song Xiaoyan from Beijing University of Technology listened to it together with dozens of teachers and students of HEBUT. Doctor Xu Yibin introduced in detailed but simple terms the latest research progress in measurement of thermal conductivity of film and thermal resistance interface, as well as the estimation of thermal resistance of compound material interface using phonon model and structural design and thermal-physical performance estimation of such materials. After this academic speech, Doctor Xu Yibin visited the lab and material testing center in the Power Building of the School, and introduced the latest progress in the field of interface research in Japan and the whole world.

  

    On October 13, Professor Ma Shugen from Ritsumeikan University in Japan visited HEBUT upon invitation, and gave a speech named “Research on biologically inspired robot system and environment adaption robot mechanisms”. Professor Ma first introduced his innovation and research in biologically inspired robot and environment adaption robot under the title of “My course of research on robot”, and then told the audience his experience from learning in this university to the learning abroad and finally the scientific research and teaching in Japan. Later, he introduced the histories and cultural features of Kyoto University and Ritsumeikan University in Japan. Professor Ma also introduced in detail the knowledge and ability to be obtained during learning as undergraduate, graduate and doctoral student as well as some useful experience in employment obtaining. Finally, Professor Ma wished all the teachers and students to “be confident, ambitious, responsible and hard working, and begin with small things”, and encouraged them to read more, think more, transcend themselves, and keep innovating. During this speech, the undergraduates and graduates attending the meeting exchanged with Professor Ma on their learning and research.




 

    On Octobe 17, Professor Suk-Bong KANG (Chinese name: Jiang Shifeng), director and chief researcher of Korean Institute of Material Science (KIMS), visited HEBUT for academic exchange and gave a speech named “Research on aluminum alloy in Korea and the status quo of such research” to the teachers and students of this School. Professor Suk-Bong KANG first introduced the overall conditions of KIMS, such as its location, history, mission, organizational framework, staff and international cooperation programs, so that the audience could know KIMS better. Later, Professor Suk-Bong KANG gave a wonderful speech named “Status and Prospects of Al alloys’ R&D in Korea”, which mainly involved the status quo of aluminum alloy industry in Korea, the status quo of aluminum alloy research in Korea and the latest research progress of aluminum alloy in KIMS. This speech, with detailed contents and lively pictures, provided the audience with better knowledge on the latest research, development and industrial application of aluminum alloy in Korea.


 

    On October 25, Professor Inoue Akihisa, member of Japanese Academy of Sciences, member of American Academy of Sciences and former president of Tohoku University in Japan, visited HEBUT upon invitation. Professor Li Qiang (secretary of Party committee of HEBUT) and Professor Yin Fuxing (vice president of HEBUT) had a meeting with Professor Inoue Akihisa, and Mr. Wang Yongning (CTO of CITIC Dicastal Co., Ltd.) and Mr. Ma Ruyu (Chairman of Tianjin Liuhe Magnesium Product Co., Ltd.) attended the meeting together with leaders of the School and some other persons concerned.

 

    Professor Li Qiang gave a warm welcome to Professor Inoue Akihisa on behalf of HEBUT. He first introduced the history and basic conditions of HEBUT, and then exchanged opinions with Professor Inoue Akihisa concerning the future cooperation and wide exchange between HEBUT and Tohoku University as well as the scientific researches of HEBUT in materials science. Professor Inoue Akihisa expressed appreciation first, and then introduced in detail the conditions of Tohoku University in teaching, scientific research and international cooperation. He wished that he could actively promote the teacher & student exchange between the two universities and future material cooperation in scientific research. After the meeting, Professor Li Qiang gave a souvenir to Professor Inoue Akihisa.

 

    During this visit, Professor Inoue Akihisa made an academic speech named “Research status, application and prospect of bulk amorphous alloy” in the library of HEBUT. He introduced in detail the latest research fruits and application of bulk amorphous alloy. Nearly 100 teachers and students listened to this speech with warm applauses.

 

    After the speech, Professor Inoue Akihisa visited the university history museum of HEBUT and the historical site of Tuancheng, and expressed admiration for the development of HEBUT in the 110 years. Later, he wrote an inscription on the guestbook to express his good wish for common efforts of Chinese and Japanese. After the visit, the participants took a photo in front of the university history museum.

 

    Later, Professor Inoue Akihisa also had a meeting with representative of CITIC Dicastal Co., Ltd., leaders of the School and relevant professors. They discussed about further cooperation, and preliminarily reached consent on the cooperation with CITIC Dicastal Co., Ltd. in amorphous alloy modifier as well as the Sino-Japan cooperation projects of HEBUT.







    On November 7, Mr. David Shum, a doctor of Harvard University in USA and technical director of Saint Gobain Company in France, visited HEBUT upon invitation. Doctor Shum and the leaders of HEBUT visited Hebei Photoelectrical Functional Crystal Material Engineering Lab, which was established by HEBUT a few days ago, discussed in detail about the future comprehensive cooperation between HEBUT and several foreign groups including Saint Gobain, and concluded a memorandum of understanding for future cooperation. This would be another point of growth of the School and even the whole university in significant scientific and technological cooperation with production organizations, and have remarkable influence on the science and technology development of HEBUT.


 

    On November 16, Professor Yoshio Bando, COO of International Center for Materials Nanoarchitectonics (WPI-MANA) of National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) in Japan, visited HEBUT upon invitation. He gave a speech named “Boron Nitride Nanotubes/nanosheets and Applications” to the teachers and students of HEBUT, which was chaired by Professor Tang Chengchun, director of the School, and listened to by nearly 100 teachers and students of HEBUT together with over 20 visiting professors and researchers such as Researcher Xu Fangfang and Researcher Zhu Yingchun from Shanghai Institute of Ceramics of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor Yin Longwei and Professor Zhan Jinhua from Shandong University, Professor Gao Yihua from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Professor Ye Changhui from Institute of Solid State Physics of Chinese Academy of Sciences.

 

    Professor Bando first introduced in detail the conditions of NIMS in talent fostering, scientific research and international cooperation & exchange, and then made a lively speech on boron nitride nanotubes/nanosheets, which was one of his research subjects. In this speech, he introduced in detail the latest research fruits of boron nitride nanotubes/nanosheets and application of this technology, which arose high interests of the audience. The audience actively asked questions, and Professor Bando carefully answered them.

 

    After the speech, Professor Wang Yanji and Professor Yin Fuxing, vice presidents of HEBUT, met Professor Bando to exchange opinions on the research of HEBUT in material science and the future exchange and cooperation. After this meeting, Professor Bando, accompanied by Professor Tang Chengchun, director of the School, visited the lab and material testing center in the Power Building of the School, got some information on the current leading researches and fundamental researches of the School, and gave a high appraisal to the development of the School in all aspects. The two parties also expressed the intent to cooperate with respect to international cooperation, resource sharing and academic exchange. This visit of Professor Bando had a positive impact on the development of the School and HEBUT, the cooperation of the two parties in science and technology, talent exchange and fostering, and so on.

   





    The successful implementation of a series of academic exchange events by the School will certainly promote the subject building of the School, strengthen scientific research and improve international academic cooperation between HEBUT and foreign organizations. Meanwhile, these events will also help to build up high-level teacher teams, improve research ability of teachers, and expand knowledge of students. This series of speeches are characterized by many countries involved, high grade of scholars, wide fields covered, and deep academic influence. They will have a far-reaching impact on the improvement of academic atmosphere of HEBUT. In future, the School will further strengthen international exchange and cooperation, develop effective mechanisms of such exchange and cooperation, and continuously improve the research level and international influence of the School and HEBUT.
