The First Doctoral Candidate Co-cultivated by HEBUT and RU Obtained Double Degree in Both Countries

On Feb.5, 2018, Yuan Hongbo, a doctoral candidate specializing in biological physics from the School of Materials Science and Engineering of HEBUT, successfully passed the doctoral dissertation defence at Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands. He was the first doctoral candidate co-cultivated by HEBUT and Radboud University Nijmegen to receive the double degree in both China and the Netherlands.

Yuan had four PhD supervisors, two of them from China and the other two from the Netherlands, i.e. Prof. Zhan Yong and Prof. Xing Chengfen from HEBUT and Prof. Alan E. Rowan and Dr. Paul H.J. Kouwer from Radboud University Nijmegen. During his doctoral study, Yuan published 16 SCI theses on the renowned international journals such as Adv. Funct. Mater., Macromolecules, Macromol. Rapid Commun., ACS Appl. Mater. Interfaces, Anal. Chem and so on, registering the total impact factor of 86 and the total citations over 60. Meanwhile, he served as the lead author of 6 articles. One of his articles has an impact factor of 12, which is the highest among his articles and became the back cover of the journal. In addition, he also owned four patents.

Yuan’s dissertation defence panel was composed of Prof. Ji Qing from HEBUT, Prof. Roeland J.M. Nolte from Radboud University Nijmegen of the Netherlands, Prof. Johan Hofkens from the University of Leuven of Belgium, Prof. Albert P.H.J. Schenning from the Eindhoven University of Technology of the Netherlands, Prof. Huib J. Bakker from the University of Amsterdam of the Netherlands, and Prof. Han J.T. Zuilhof from Wageningen University of the Netherlands. And the chairman of the dissertation defence panel was Prof. Roeland J.M. Nolte, the academician of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). In the end of the dissertation defense, the judges thought highly of Yuan’s research achievements and considered his dissertation prominent, thus unanimously allowing him to pass the dissertation defense and awarding him a doctorate degree of science.
