The School of Civil Engineering derives from the Civil Engineering Division of Hebei Provincial Institute of Technology founded in 1946. In 1962, in the progress of re-organization of departments and schools of university in the range of the country, the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering of Hebei Provincial Institute of Technology was established. The Department provided five undergraduate majors programs: Civil Engineering, Water Supply and Drainage Engineering, Bridge and Ferry Engineering, Heating and Ventilation Engineering, Architecture. In 1994, the Architecture was independent from the Department, and the Department was named Civil Engineering Department and next year renamed School of Civil Engineering.
Now, in the School, there are 100 staff in the School, including 69 academic staff. Among them, 21 are professors and 36 associate professors. The number of undergraduate students, graduate students, doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers are 3249, 418, 43 and 10, respectively in the school.
Currently, the school provide six undergraduate programs including Civil Engineering, Water Supply and Drainage Engineering, Bridge and Ferry Engineering, Traffic Engineering, Transportation Engineering, and Surveying and Mapping Engineering. In all teaching courses for the six programs, one is assessed outstanding at state level and three at provincial level. The School was awarded ‘Hebei Innovation Highland of Education in Civil Engineering’ and teaching platform of “Hebei Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Civil Engineering”. In undergraduate, the School has Cooperating with Case Western Reserve University and Swansea University. The School is running an international undergraduate education program ‘2+2 dual-degree’ with the two Universities. Also, the School is running a state undergraduate education program ‘Scheme of Excellent Engineers Training’. In the undergraduate program assessment held by the Ministry of National Construction in 2003 and 2009, the School got very high score.
The School is the only school in Hebei province that offer Ph.D program post-doctoral research program studies in the subject of Civil Engineering. Also the school provide six master degree program including Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Municipal Engineering, Bridge and Tunnel Engineering, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Engineering, and Road and Railway Engineering. The School also provide two programs of Master of Engineering including Architecture and Civil Engineering, and Traffic and Transportation Engineering. The undergraduate program Civil Engineering is one of the ‘Key programs of 211 Scheme”.
The laboratory of the school is the provincial key laboratory – ‘Research Center of Hebei Province in Civil Engineering Technology’. The laboratory has all necessary test facilities for civil engineering research. The experimental test area is 6890 square meters.
The research results of the School has won two second class and seven third class Hebei Provincial awards for Progress in Science and Technology. The School has also won one third class Hebei Provincial award for Outstanding Achievement in Social Science. Since 2005, the School has published more than 262 papers, and 182 of them are indexed by SCI or EI. The School has also published 5 Monographs, and 1 Hebei provincial construction standards. The School has registered 12 patents and 8 software copyrights. More than 150 research projects, including 9 National Natural Science Foundation Projects, 15 Provincial Natural Science Foundation Projects and 126 industry projects, has been carrying out in the School and the research funding is more than RMB 23 million.
Since 1989, nearly 6,000 undergraduate students have had their university education in the School majoring civil engineering and traffic and transportation engineering. The alumnus of the School is all over the country.
