1. History

The School of Energy and Environmental Engineering, Hebei University of Technology (HUT), located in Beichen district, Tianjin, P. R. China, was established as the Department of Farm Machinery of Hebei Institute of Technology in 1958 with two majors of Internal Combustion Engine and Farm Machinery. In 1981, Department of Farm Machinery was renamed as the Second Mechanical Engineering Department covering five majors of Tractors, Cars, Internal Combustion Engine, Casting Process & Equipment, and Metal Heat Treatment Process & Equipment. In 1985, the major of Thermal Power Engineering was developed, and then in 1992, Power & Mechanical Engineering Department was developed consisting of two majors-Thermal Power Engineering and Internal Combustion Engine; and then the majors of Marine Engineering and Environmental Engineering were developed in 1993 and in 2000 respectively. In 2002, Power & Mechanical Engineering Department was reformed, from which the School of Energy and Environmental Engineering was established with three undergraduate majors of Thermal Power Engineering, Built Environment & Equipment Engineering, and Environmental Engineering.


2. Current situation

The school has three departments-Thermal Engineering (i.e. Thermal Engineering), Built Environment & Equipment Engineering, and Environmental Engineering. With the sources from the school, two centers including Tianjin Engineering Center of Building Energy Supply Technology and Research Center of New Energy and Building Energy Saving Technology of Caofeidian Industrial Park Circular Economy and New Energy Development Research Institute were established. Now the school has faculty of 54, including 13 professors and 10 associate professors. There are 27 teachers with Ph.D degree, one of the teachers is honored as The Model of Workers in Tianjin. Over 150 graduate students and over 1840 undergraduate students are studying here. The school has the second-level disciplines authorized to offer doctorate degrees in Heating, Gas Supply, Ventilation & Air Conditioning Engineering, and the fist-level disciplines authorized to offer masterate degrees in Power Engineering and Engineering Thermophysics. Thermal Engineering is one of key disciplines of Hebei province, and Environmental Engineering is one of key disciplines of HUT.

The school has been encouraging all its faculty members and students to follow the university motto of “Being diligent, prudent, justicial, and loyal” for many years, and it is striving towards the goal of providing a high-level education. The students have obtained many national and provincial awards including the fist prize of “Manual Environment Engineering Discipline Award”, the second prizes of “National University Student Social Practice and Science Contest on Energy Saving and Emission Reduction” and “National University Student Science Contest on Refrigeration and Air-condition Industry”, the third prize of “National University Student Challenge Cup Contest”, and the special prize of “Challenge Cup Contest” in Hebei province. The employment rate of students after graduation is around 95%. The school has always adhered to serving the development of regional economy of Hebei, Tianjin and the Bohai Rim, and providing personnel and intellectual supports for the innovation-driven development, scientific development, and regional economic and social development in Hebei province, actively carrying out scientific research and social services, as well as constantly improving the level of scientific research. More than 20 national research projects have been supported such as Major State Basic Research Development Program of China, National High Technology Research and Development Program of China, National Key Technology Research and Development Program of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, and National Natural Science Foundation of China, etc. More than 40 top journal papers have been published. The technology and products on the heat metering method by heating time and heating area have been widely used in the northern part of China.

The school has been paying more attention to the connotation development, quality improvement, and brand building of international exchanges and cooperation. We have established the long-term cooperation and exchange relationships with more than 20 well-known universities in the world, such as the National University of Singapore, Technical University of Denmark, Beuth University of Applied Sciences, Ryerson University, the University of Manchester, the University of Leeds, Yokohama National University, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Tianjin University, etc. More than 10 young teachers have been selected to go abroad for academic visit, project collaboration, and education exchange. More than 30 well-known experts and scholars have been invited to give lectures at the school, which is benefit for enhancing friendship and contact, strengthening cooperation, and improving the education level.

At present, the faculty and the students are earnestly making arduous efforts for the goal of the high-level university, My HUT Dream and the high-level school.



2.1 Energy and Power Engineering

Energy and Power Engineering, one of key disciplines of Hebei province, is located in the leading position among the same majors in the universities of Hebei province. It has the authority to offer masterate degree in Energy and Power Engineering. Furthermore, it has its own characteristics and impact in China. Energy and Power Engineering discipline now is in the application of doctoral degree granting. Under the guidance of the university's ideology, it gives priority to undergraduate education to foster innovative high-quality talents, and actively develops graduate education. It is the main training base for energy and power engineering talents in Hebei province, and the main technical support unit for the economic development of Energy and Power Engineering disciplines in Hebei province. It severs Hebei economic construction, and strives to contribute to national economic construction. Thermal Energy and Power Engineering, in the “211 Project” construction, has set up a series of laboratories and benches such as “liquid fuel atomization and combustion”, “heating supply system using biomass briquettes”, “CNG motor system”, “bulk material fluidized bed drying”, “large electrical products heat transfer enhancement”, etc. The school has achieved 42 national, provincial and horizontal issues, more than 7 million RMB research funding and 8 patents licensing.

The reaserch findings have been applied to relevant industril areas. For example, the CNG engine and Vehicle emissions detection and control system have recorded dozens of million RMB. The mechanism of large forced-oil-cooled power transformers has been applied to nationally significant projects such as Qinshan nuclear power plant. And the effervescent atomizer has been applied by Daikin Japan. Etc.



2.2 Built Environment & Equipment Engineering

Built Environment & Equipment Engineering was established in 2002. At present, it has the authorities to offer masterate and doctorate degrees in Heating, Gas Supply, Ventilation & Air Conditioning Engineering. Built Environment & Equipment Engineering major cultivates senior engineering and technical talents undertaking design, installation & commissioning, operation & management of indoor environment equipment system and building public facilities, and special environment development needed in various sectors of national economy. Graduates have the abilities of design, installation, commissioning & operation for public system of heating, air condition, gas supply, and building water supply & drainage, and for building thermal energy supply system.

Several reaserch findings have been applied to relevant areas. Heat metering system and energy saving technology has been included in the promotion of scientific and technological achievements in the Ministry of Housing, resulting in the cumulative application of dozens million square meters. It has been applied to all prefecture-level cities in Hebei province, and to other cities located in Beijing, Shandong, Inner Mongolia, Jilin, Heilongjiang, etc. Energy saving technology of multi-source network and optimal operation in urban central heating has become the technical solution of network design analysis and operation. Retrofits of energy saving for heat supply network have been performed in Shijiazhuang Huadian Heating Company, China Power Investment Corporation (CPI) Shijiazhuang Heating Company, Xingtai Heating Power Company, etc. The theory and technology of efficient use for renewable energy has been applied to Tangshan energy saving demonstration city. Solar-ground high temperature heat storage and across-seasonal building energy supply technologies have been demonstrated in some cities such as Tianjin, Tangshan. Heat transfer performance testing, analysis and database technologies for rock & soil under the action of heat flux have been used more than 60 times in resource exploration thermal response test (TRT) in some provinces and cities such as Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shandong, Anhui, etc., with the number of heat transfer drilling over 100, which has a greater impact on the land and resource exploration industry. Online monitoring and evaluation of energy efficiency technologies for renewable energy applications have been considerably demonstrated in many cities such as Tangshan (including Caofeidian Industrial Park and Eco-city), Hengshui, Shijiazhuang, Chengde, etc.


2.3 Environmental Engineering

Environmental Engineering, one of the key disciplines of HUT, was established in 2000. It has become a multi-disciplinary intersectant environment disciplines supported by the Energy and Power Engineering Department. In recent years, Environmental Engineering Department has undertaken more than 20 national, provincial and municipal longitudinal research projects, as well as many horizontal research projects. At present, it has the authority to offer masterate degree in Energy and Environment Engineering. Environmental Engineering is committed to cultivating senior talents engaged in government planning departments, economic management departments, environmental protection research & design units, industrial & mining units, etc.

The teaching and research of Environmental Engineering directly serves Hebei province pollution prevention and environmental protection, as well as provides advanced scientific and technical supports for the green energy development and the integrated control of environment pollution. Environmental monitoring laboratory, water & sewerage treatment laboratory, and thermal power machinery pollutants monitoring laboratory have been established. Wet membrane electrostatic precipitator technology has been applied in Hebei province. And clean development mechanism have played a guiding and promoting role in the development of CDMA project in Hebei province.
